Office Chair Mechanisms – How to Decide Which Will Work Best For You

When looking to purchase an office chair online, more often than not you will end up finding yourself looking at the different options/mechanisms a chair comes with. To most of us, these additional options read like a foreign language and most of us have to take our best guess at what they could be unless you have a chair expert to speak to. As with any product, it is important to fully understand what your office chair is capable of in order to adjust the chair to fit your body and needs. At the time of purchase if you do not understand the importance of adding on specific features and neglect to do so, you may be disappointed when your chair does not fully meet all your expectations. When you sit in your new office chair for the first time you want to be fully prepared to be able to know how to use the mechanisms that came with your chair correctly.

Most value oriented task chairs or leather conference chairs come with a standard spring tilt mechanism, the least ergonomic option. Chairs that have a spring tilt mechanism go up and down, swivel, and have one locking position. A variation on these is the multi-lock mechanism, which goes up and down and swivels, but allow for multiple locking positions. The pivot point for these is found at the center of the chair, which explains why they are not ergonomic. If you recline on a chair that has this mechanism, the front of the seat reclines at the same rate as the backrest, thus it puts pressure on your thighs and limits the circulation of blood.

A multi-function mechanism is the epitome of a classic ergonomic mechanism. It is also known as a mid-pivot tilt mechanism, as the pivot point is in the center of the chair, but it has just enough to cross that threshold. To be considered multi-function, one of these mechanisms will have to have at least three paddles that do the following:

1. Control the height of the chair.

2. Lock the back rest at multiple angles.

3. Knee Tilt Control – allows the user to lock and adjust the angle the seat is.

Other features with these mechanisms usually include manual ratchet control for back height and a seat slider. The seat slider, however, is an add on for most mechanisms, and not built in.

The knee tilt promotes keeping your feet on the ground and thighs parallel to the ground when you recline, thus reducing the pressure on your thighs and achieving more blood flow – more blood flow means less yawning and less feeling fatigued throughout the day. A knee tilt mechanism will have height adjustment, tilt tension and be able to lock the back rest in multiple positions. The 2:1 synchro tilt option keeps your knees and legs in an ergonomically correct position while allowing you to comfortably recline. The ratio means for every 2 degrees of back recline, the seat reclines 1 degree, thus ensuring ergonomic comfort. Most of these mechanisms are sloped down and back, putting the attachment point of the mechanism and chair towards the front of the seat. The knee tilt allows for one’s feet to be grounded while leaning back instead of hanging in the air, which as we all know bad for your circulation and can lead to the uncomfortable sensation of having your leg fall asleep.

The type of mechanism you choose largely depends on the application you need the chair for. For quick tasking or conferencing purposes, where sitting is limited to around three hours or less at a time, simple spring tilt mechanisms suffice. Conversely, any seating application where sitting duration range from 6 to 8 hours a day, a knee tilt mechanism is highly recommended and preferred by most. While office chairs with knee tilt mechanisms generally tend to run a little higher in price, the ergonomic benefits that will result from using such a mechanism will become evident over time. With that being said, the next time you are searching for a new office chairs take all the aforementioned mechanisms into account to determine which will be best for your specific needs, and consider a multi-tilt mechanism if using your chair for more than three hours a day or for a more ergonomically correct way of seating.

Craftsman Leather Types

Stickley uses a number of different types of leather in its Craftsman collection, and you really have to see them and feel them to appreciate the differences between them. Stickley Sectionals

Stickley leather sectionals are available in the 100, 200, 300 and 400 series. These are defined as:

100 series: This series is defined as being a universal series of sectionals for general use. Seat height is 22.5 inches, and depth is 36 inches. The seat cushions and back pillows are 4.65 inches thick. The 100 series is highly customizable, with 12 arm styles, 4 backs and 7 skirt styles to choose from. You have a wide selection of different sectional components, and you may even choose your sofa width by the inch – any width from 65 – 103 inches. This series also offers a sleep sofa.

200 series: You have the same custom options as with the 100 series, although the frames are 40 inches deep, and seats 21.5 inches high. This is a more suitable sectional if you prefer a slightly lower seat but deeper frame. Cushions and pillows are 6 and 5.5. inches deep respectively. The 200 Series of sectional furniture comes with 4 throw pillows and a kidney throw pillow with each sofa.

300 Series: This series offers lower seating at 20 inches, with low profile 38 inch frames. Cushions are 6 inches with back pillows at 4 inches. This and the 100 series also come with 2 throw pillows on the sofas.

400 series: With 40 inch deep frames and 21.5 inch seating, the 400 series is the ‘motion’ option of the Stickley leather sectionals with power recliners with infinite position switches available on any of the components (except ottomans!). The backs have zero clearance, so they fit tight to the walls if needed. There are static options available for each piece. It is also possible to have any part of a sofa fitted with motion options if you want only one or two of the seats to recline.

NFL Football Legend: Joe Namath

When NFL football experts, analysts and even opinionated fans begin making lists of the most beloved players to don a professional team’s uniform, no accounting would be complete without football legend Joe Namath.

Joseph William Namath stole the football world’s heart at the tender age of 19 when he made his debut as Quarterback for the Alabama Crimson Tide. With his bigger than life coach, and football legend in his own right, Paul “Bear” Bryant demanding perfection from his program at every turn, Joe Willie did not disappoint. Together, in 1964, they hoisted the National Championship trophy over their heads and parted ways the upcoming summer when Joe was drafted to the AFL football team, the New York Jets.

The small town kid from Beaver Creek, Pennsylvania was immediately launched into stardom, making good on his magnetic charm, handsome face, and football prowess. What is now commonplace, and entertaining to fans in every media outlet, was once a novelty idea that turned the television world on its head: Athletes in advertising. Promoting products and endorsing brands with a flash of a smile, and a demeanor that even grandmother would love, “Broadway Joe” was born.

Before the NFL football merger in 1970, Broadway Joe had cemented himself as a household name, proving that football wasn’t his only calling. With a cockiness that commanded attention, Mr. Namath took his New York Jets to Superbowl III in 1969 against the Baltimore Colts. The Don Shula led Colts were touted as the best NFL football team of all-time leading up to the showdown, but Joe wasn’t swayed by their splendor, aptitude, or incredible history-making lineup. Baltimore was heading into the AFL-NFL clash led by their very own football legend, Johnny Unitas and a defense that could stop a freight train, going downhill at maximum speed. Unmoved by the facts and statistics, in his decisive, steadfast and alluring style of interaction with fans, Joe Namath guaranteed a victory over the highly favored Baltimore Colts just three days before they were to face off at the Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami, Florida.

As the first official championship game to bear the name “Superbowl” the Jets/Colts match-up would go down in history, leaving an impressionable mark on all those who have since gathered around their televisions to root their team to the biggest NFL football game of the year. The Jets hardly murdered the Colts, winning 16-7, but they did intercept the legendary, all-American Johnny Unitas four times, which was unheard of during his time at the helm. Broadway Joe ran off the field in victory, with one hand over his head, waving with his index finger in the air, proclaiming silently to all who watched him swagger off in an excited trot that he and his team were officially number one.

The decisive difference between Namath and Unitas was evident in their appearance, without a single word being uttered by either party. Joe was a long-haired kid who flaunted his flair by wearing a full-length mink coat on the sidelines for warmth. Johnny had a crew cut, and played by all of the rules. You were a fan of one or the other at the time, but typically not both. Especially since their teams were mortal enemies going forward. Just beginning his stark projection into stardom, Joe was an NFL legend every second after the clock ticked to zero in that championship game, even though he had only been in the league for four seasons. He was named Superbowl MVP, and became the first football player ever to win a championship in both the NFL and college.

Before he could even begin training camp exercises in the spring to prepare and defend his promised and delivered title, Joe was wooed into the bright lights, sounds and splendor of Hollywood. Outside of his iconic commercials in the late 1960s, and his acclaimed football career to match, his celebrity status emanated on screen while appearing in movies, popular television programs and while taking the guest chair in the late night hilarity that was The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Even if you had not watched a single football game in your life, you knew who Broadway Joe was, and you loved him. Well, unless you were a Colts fan.

Joe Namath would spend the next seven seasons charming New Yorkers with his low-cut white cleats, fancy footwork and strong arm. He racked up numerous AFL all-star selections, as well as a Pro-bowl and All-pro appearance. He was named to the AFL All-time team, was AFL MVP twice, adding an AFL championship, and a Superbowl championship to his resume. The latter is still the only championship title his beloved New York Jets can claim to date. He left New York to play one last year with the Los Angeles Rams, and had his faithful #12 jersey retired by Gang Green as soon as he did. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985, and still spends his days wondering through the Jets’ training camp in the spring. He is engraved in the hearts of so many, thanks to his playing days, and his whimsical smile that could make a blind man blush. Joe Namath’s love of the game, dashing personality and exceptional good looks helped turn a divided, part-time entertainment source into a single NFL football league. A league that now represents a full time engagement for men, women and children around the world, and for that we should all be thankful.
