How to Choose the Proper Office Chair For Your Frame

Finding the right office chair is not only an important task but is also becoming crucial as the time spent sitting in a sedentary position has increased with hectic work schedules and the demands careers in business fields bring. The problem is, unless you are an ergonomist or have one readily available at your dispense, it is difficult to determine how to find a chair that will properly fit your body. The right office chair should uniformly support the body, allow for easy movement, be easy to adjust, provide long-term comfort, and help to maintain proper posture. Just like people, office chairs come in varying shapes and sizes. The problem is not every person will fit into one uniform chair design, unless your proportions perfectly match up with the design of the chair. If your chair is not properly fitted to your proportions you will find overtime that you will begin to experience discomfort which can lead to more serious problems over time. Consider the following tips before purchasing your next office chair.

Seat Depth

The depth of a seat is an essential component in the overall comfort of your office chair. If you have a seat that is too small you will not get the support necessary for your thighs to sit comfortably throughout the day. If your seat is too big, this will put pressure against the back of your knees which can also cause discomfort. While seated, measure the distance from the back of your knee to the back rest. You should have about an inch and a half or 2-3 fingers distance between the seat edge and back of the knee. If you are unsure of if a seat will be too short for you, consider finding a chair that has the option for a seat slider which allows for you to adjust the depth of your chair.

Seat Height

Your chair should allow you to sit with your feet flat on the floor or on a foot rest with knees bent at a 90 degree angle. This can be achieved with the proper seat height. Measure the height from the floor to the crease at the back of the knee. Take into consideration the type of footwear that you typically wear to work, heel for example may add a few inches onto the height of the seat needed. Most office chairs will only come with one cylinder size which allows for about a 4″ range of adjustment, however, some specialty ergonomic chairs have the option for different height cylinders which can be of use to individuals that are taller or shorter.

Armrests

Many of today’s computer users experience neck/shoulder pain due to their arms being elevated and unsupported. Armrests are designed to support the neck and shoulder muscles, however if you are not careful in your selection they may limit access to the keyboard or your desk. Armrests should not restrict movement or access to a workstation. The armrest height should be the same as resting elbow height, they should not be higher or lower or this will cause discomfort. Look for armrests that can be width and height adjustable to properly align them to your body’s needs. Shoulders and upper arms should be in line with the torso generally about perpendicular to the floor and relaxed (not elevated or stretched forward).

Back rest

The shape of the back rest should follow the natural curve of your back. This is why many office chairs are designed with an “S” shape curve in order to conform to the natural shape of one’s back. Often back rests are fixed in place making it difficult to properly support the natural shape of taller or shorter user’s backs. An adjustable back rest or lumbar support eliminates this problem and allows for the user position the back rest to meet the shape of their spine. The height of the back is another concern. For those that experience upper back pain, it is essential to find a taller back that will fully support their shoulders and neck.

Seat Width

The seat cushion should fully support your frame in both depth and width. A seat cushion that is too small will not provide full support and one that is too large will not allow for comfortable utilization of the armrests. Look at the distance between armrests to make sure they are not too wide where one needs to reach to use the armrest or too narrow where one is not able to sit.

When you have a large area that you are going to use for performers and shows you are likely going to want to have different sections that cost different amounts of money. The ticket prices for the sets that are directly in front of the stage will naturally be higher than the prices for seats that are far to the back from the stage.

One problem that many commercial venues have is people paying to sit in the cheap seats and then moving into the more expensive section after the show begins. An easy way to stop this from having is to have colored auditorium chairs in each section. Then supply the person with a colored stamp on their hand that matches the section they are seated in.

You could place red auditorium chairs directly in front of the stage. When the ticket taker at the entrance to the establishment sells seats in the red section they will stamp the hand of the ticket holders with a red star. Then when the people have left their seat and are returning any of the ushers in the building will be able to easily check the people and see what seats they are supposed to be in.

You can buy auditorium chairs in several different colors so you could break the area up into multiple sections according to how well the people in the chairs are going to be able to see the stage. Then you can charge ticket prices accordingly.

If you did not want to stamp the hand of your patrons you could get plastic wrist bands that were color coordinated to the seats. The wrist bands would be easy for the ushers to check when people were going to and from their seats.

The colored wrist bands would also help avoid confusion. People would know that the chairs they were sitting in were the same color as the bands on their wrists. They could easily find their way back to their seats using these color coded section indicators.

Many sporting arenas have switched from the bleachers to the using of auditorium chairs. The color coding for the sections helps the fans quickly find where they are supposed to be seated. If you have ever been to a large stadium and went to the concession stand then you know how easily you can get turned around and lost. If your seats were in a color coded section then that would not happen.

Having the color coded chairs and wrist bands would also help when a child was lost in an auditorium or a stadium. The announcer could tell the parents what section the child was supposed to be seated in. The people that work as ushers could also take the child to the right section even if the child could not tell them where they were seated. The colored wrist band would alert them to where the parents were sitting. The child could be returned quickly and the day saved.

Are kitchen tables outdated in today’s modern homes? Is kitchen dining furniture still used? There are two reasons for asking this question: the increasing popularity of islands incorporating breakfast bars in larger kitchens, and the trend toward open plan areas in smaller and even average-size homes.

Kitchen Tables and Dining Tables

In bygone days, it was not unusual for most meals to be eaten in the kitchen. Even if a family had a separate dining room, that was often kept for formal dining and special occasions while family meals were taken at the kitchen table. The dining table was of a higher quality, often highly French polished and of fixed dimensions.

Kitchen tables came in a wide range of styles, sizes and finishes, and these are still available today. Dining tables in the Mission style, for example, are often fundamentally a tabletop resting on four plain legs. Such tables would stay in the kitchen surrounded by as many chairs as people living in the house. They would be used for all family meals.

Adjustable Tables

This is fine if the kitchen is large enough to accommodate a full size table and still leave plenty room for cooking, preparation and the 101 other tasks carried out in the kitchen. For smaller kitchens, the table would have to take up less space. These come in the form of expandable or adjustable tables.

There are several types of these, including gate-leg tables where a leaf is attached to the tabletop by hinges and raised when needed. It rests on one or two legs that are also hinged to pull out as a support for the flap. Another type involves extra leafs that can be slotting into a gap formed by pulling two parts of the main tabletop apart.

There are other types of expanding mechanisms which are also in use today, both for kitchen tables and formal dining tables where the space available is limited. Where a room has multiple functions, it makes sense to use a table that is full-size only when in use.

Breakfast Bars and Kitchen Islands

In the modern era of rush and go, fewer people sit down as a family to a formal breakfast. They often eat individually, and the need for a family-size kitchen table is sadly diminished. Breakfast bars have become more common, where people sit on high seats or bar stools at a ledge set against a wall or at a kitchen island. This design is likely to make them eat up as fast as possible!

Kitchen islands are designed to stand in the center of the kitchen floor area, offering access to all four sides. One side is sometimes recessed to give more leg room, though this is not essential. An additional benefit is the extra storage space the kitchen island offers. This can be provided in the form of cupboards, drawers, wine racks, cutlery and knife storage, and so on. Some incorporate a sink and faucet, while others have a butcher block recessed into the top – or sometimes both!

Open Plan Designs

In open plan designs, the kitchen often shares a space with the main living areas or the dining area – or even both in a few cases. In such situations you will often find a breakfast bar incorporated into the kitchen island and a more formal dining table in the main living or dining area.

With such open plan arrangements, may people believe that two tables would look out of place. The kitchen island makes the best use of the open space in the cooking area, and is sometimes fitted with a hob and an extractor fan and duct just above it.

Is Kitchen Dining Furniture Still in Use?

Kitchen dining furniture continues to sell well and are still much in use despite the above modern trends. Simple Mission and hand-crafted Amish designs are popular, and the old rustic style of pioneering log tables and benches also sell. Double pedestal and trestle tables ae popular for large kitchens and some kitchen islands are designed as a tabletop with storage beneath it. Extra end flaps are sometimes provided to be raised when more dining space is required.

Conclusions

The traditional kitchen table is alive and well, although there are not as many of them in use as there were a generation ago. Smaller kitchens, open plan designs and a more hurried way of life have led to the emergence of the breakfast bar for breakfast and informal meals.

Formal dining tables tend to be restricted to formal dining rooms or dining areas within an open plan structure. Kitchen dining furniture is generally restricted to breakfast bars. However, in larger kitchens, kitchen tables are alive and kicking and still available in a number of different styles and designs.
